Description

Bugs and Bunny were rescued from a livestock auction in Texas. They were separated at the auction and we managed to get them back together. These two literally wouldn’t be together anymore if it wasn’t for YOU. I hope you feel so cool and so important for helping us get them back to each other. After years and years of hard work, it’s my privilege to provide retirement and love through their final years. TOGETHER. Thank you

Our sweet Bunny left us today. Today when we pulled up at the new property I looked out and saw Bunny laying down with Bugs standing over her. This was a very normal sight as the whole herd sun bathes in this very spot every day. About 20 minutes later I noticed her still laying down. Another 20 went by and I decided to go double check she was alright. On my walk over I saw her trying to stand but her hind end was no longer strong enough to raise her body up off the ground. She would look over at the herd and try stand, but her hind end continually gave out. My heart sank. As I got closer Bugs saw I’d made it over, and turned and walked off to join the rest of the herd who was grazing about a hundred feet away. It really felt like he was waiting for me to come and he wanted to be sure someone knew she was down. Over the last few months Bunny has slowed down a lot. She had also rapidly lost weight but was gaining it back on a refeeding diet. Unfortunately the added weight made it too hard for her to get up on her own because of her age and work load she endured. Bunny worked her whole life (prior to rescue) as a plow horse with Bugs. Her body was used as hard as a horse’s body could be used. As she tried to stand I kept telling her it’s ok and she worked hard enough, and to just rest. She took a big sigh and laid quietly, seemingly just to please her worried owner. I brought her alfalfa and sat with her while she ate her last meal. I thought about what an ending she would have had if we didn’t go for it last minute and save this pair and reunite them, over a year ago. My eyes filled with tears as I listened to the birds comfort us both. She was calm and enjoying her hay overlooking the water in her favorite spot. What an honor to give this last day to her. She’s up in horse heaven while her body is still in the pasture to give Bugs time to say his goodbyes. We’ll be watching him closely and seeing how he adjusts.. they really loved each other and no one else, honestly. Thank you to everyone who rallied behind us and helped us save both Bugs and Bunny. Her last moments were peace, just like she deserved.
